Failure is a powerful word that always seems to weigh folks down. Part of that is because there are always readily available examples of failure to reference especially in a project environment. In addition, failure is something that is very visible and normally has negative emotions associated to it, which gives it a stigma.
As project managers we are taught to do anything and everything we can to avoid failure, yet it happens to each of us. We need to be able to cut through the fog of failure in order to help ourselves and our teams successfully learn from it and get past it.
It is important to start out by stating the obvious which is that project management and failure are closely interrelated. People see project failures on a daily basis from large ones that are reported in the media to small individual tasks that never were completed. The initial reaction is to run. Run as far as you can literally and figuratively from the failure much in the same way that we do with conflict. For some reason we feel that with failure being out of sight that it will also be out of mind ... Stop there!
To be successful as a project manager, you need to do the exact opposite and face the failure.
Embracing Failure
Failure is an opportunity waiting to be grabbed. I know that looking at failure as a positive is going against the grain, but take a step back and see the benefits that can be found when you take advantage of failure.
