Political Savvy is a Project Manager Necessity
You need to look beyond your team if you want to influence the decision making process, writes PMplanet columnist Ron Ponce of Fog City Consulting.
As a project manager you are a person of influence whether you like it or not. As such, you need to assess not only the situation at hand, but also the people that are involved in order to determine what buttons to push to successfully be able to influence the situation in a favorable direction to you and your project.
Top project managers will call out that it is not enough to worry about just the person or group that you see and interact with, you need to be aware of the unseen. That person’s manager, that manager’s manager, and so on, and then there are those areas that are not represented but are potentially impacted by your advice.
You can quickly see that you need to be aware of a large number of people either directly or indirectly. We can simply call it the politics of influence. As a person looking to influence others, you need to be astute about the politics of the organization and the client as well as have strategies to help you navigate those political waters in order to be able to successfully influence others on behalf of your project.
